Contain, relieve, clean

Sewage backup response

A sewage backup is a health problem before it is a plumbing problem, and it gets handled in that order.

Containment goes down before any tool comes out. Then we relieve the line at the cleanout so nothing further enters the building, restore flow, and only after that deal with what has already surfaced. Working the line first while sewage continues to rise is how a contained incident becomes a whole-floor loss.

Once the line is open, the affected area is cleaned and disinfected, and everything is documented as we go. That documentation matters more than people expect, because a claim assessed weeks later is decided on dated photographs and camera footage rather than on anyone's recollection.

Sewage backup response

Keep away from it

  • Do not walk through it in bare feet or open shoes
  • Keep children and pets out of the room entirely
  • Do not run fans across it, which aerosolizes the contamination
  • Do not put contaminated items back into use
  • Do not use any water in the building until it is cleared

What we document

  • Dated photographs of the condition on arrival
  • The camera run showing the cause
  • What was cleared, where, and with what
  • The condition of the area when we left

Know the difference in the water

Clean water at a floor drain points at that drain. Dirty water points at the main line, which means the whole building is loaded and every fixture is contributing. That single observation changes the whole response, so tell us which one you are looking at.

Questions about sewage backup response

Do you do the full restoration?

We handle containment, the line, and cleaning and disinfecting the immediate work area. Where flooring, drywall or contents are affected you also need a restoration contractor, and we would rather tell you that on arrival than pretend we have finished.

What causes most backups here?

Main line restriction, most commonly root intrusion at a joint, accumulated grease, or a bellied section holding solids. The washing machine or a long shower is usually just the volume that finally exposed it.
