Cast iron descaling

Cast iron corrodes from the inside out. The rough, flaking layer that forms catches everything that passes and turns a 4 inch pipe into an effective 2 inch one.

Riverside, Avondale, Springfield, San Marco and Murray Hill are full of houses on their original cast iron, and after sixty or eighty years those lines are lined with tuberculation: hard, jagged mineral and rust scale that grabs paper, hair and grease. The house did not develop a habit problem. The pipe simply got narrower and rougher.

Descaling uses chain knockers and specialized cutting heads to knock that layer off and take the interior back toward bare metal, followed by jetting to flush the debris out. It is not a repair and it will not resurrect a pipe that has rotted through at the bottom, but on a line that is structurally sound it frequently buys years on a pipe somebody has already quoted you to replace.

Cast iron descaling

Signs your cast iron has scaled

  • Repeat blockages with no obvious cause
  • Slow drainage that never fully recovers after a clean
  • Cabling brings back rust flakes and hard debris
  • A 1970s or older house on original lines
  • Gurgling that returns a few weeks after every service

How we approach it

  • Camera the line first to confirm scale, not collapse
  • Descale in stages with the right head for the pipe
  • Jet out everything the knocker released
  • Camera again afterward so you see the difference

The camera decides

Descaling and replacement are very different bills, and the only honest way to choose between them is to look. If the bottom of the pipe has corroded away, descaling is the wrong answer and we will say so on the spot rather than take the easier job.

Questions about cast iron descaling

Can descaling save a pipe I was told needs replacing?

Often, yes. Full replacement quotes are sometimes written off a blockage rather than off camera footage. If the pipe is scaled but structurally intact, descaling and jetting is a fraction of the cost. If it is rotted through, it genuinely does need replacing and we will confirm that with footage you keep.

Will descaling damage the cast iron?

Done with the correct head at the correct speed, no. The scale is a deposit sitting on the pipe, not the pipe itself. The judgment call is whether enough sound metal remains underneath, which is exactly what the pre-camera is for.
