Slow build, obvious symptom
Clogged shower drains
Standing ankle deep by the end of a shower is the classic first symptom, and it usually appears months before the drain actually stops.
Shower drains fill with a rope of hair bound together by soap scum and body oil. It forms just below the strainer and grows downward into the trap, gradually reducing how fast water can leave. Nothing dramatic happens for a long time, and then one morning the water does not go anywhere.
Because showers sit low, they are also one of the first places a main line backup shows itself. That distinction matters enormously: if the water appearing in your shower is dirty and you did not put it there, this is not a shower clog, it is sewage finding the lowest exit available.

Warning signs
- Water around your ankles by the end of a shower
- Draining fine at first then slowing mid-shower
- A gurgle from the drain when a toilet is flushed
- Dirty water rising in the base on its own
- A smell from the drain when the room is closed up
Worth trying first
- Lift the strainer and remove what you can reach
- Fit a hair catcher afterward, which prevents most of this
- Run the shower a minute if the bathroom is rarely used
- Flush a nearby toilet and watch: if the base fills, call us
The best five dollars you will spend
A hair catcher that sits over the strainer prevents more shower clogs than any product you can pour down one. Get the type that sits on top rather than the type that pushes into the drain, which just becomes the next thing to block.

Questions about clogged shower drains
Why does my shower gurgle when I flush the toilet?
They share a branch line, and the flush is displacing air through the shower's water seal because the line cannot breathe properly. It usually means the shared branch is restricted, or the vent is. Either way it is the stage before something stops.
Can I use drain opener on a shower?
We would rather you did not. It does not dissolve hair, which is what the clog is made of, and it sits in the trap in prolonged contact with the pipe. A hair catcher and a proper clean solve it permanently for less.
